Junior Hockey Team Escapes Serious Harm After Bus Slides Off Alberta Highway

Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): A bus transporting a junior hockey team from Athabasca veered off a northern Alberta highway and ended up in a wooded ditch early Friday, leaving several passengers injured but sparing the group from any fatalities.

According to the RCMP, the single-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 2, south of Athabasca, during the early morning hours. Emergency crews arriving at the scene found multiple occupants of the bus hurt as a result of the incident. Two teenage players were taken to hospital for treatment, though their injuries were described as not life-threatening. Others on board also suffered minor injuries.

The National Junior Hockey League later confirmed that the vehicle was carrying members of the Athabasca Rivermen Junior A Hockey Club. The team includes players between the ages of 15 and 19 and was en route to a scheduled game in Crowsnest Pass, in southern Alberta.

Investigators believe winter driving conditions played a role in the crash, with icy sections of roadway contributing to the loss of control. Athabasca RCMP reminded motorists to remain cautious and adapt their driving to seasonal hazards.

In a statement, the NJHL said it remains in close contact with team officials and local authorities and will ensure players and staff have access to appropriate support services following the incident.

Athabasca is situated roughly 150 kilometres north of Edmonton.
