Jewar Airport to Be Renamed Narendra Modi International Airport, Yogi Adityanath Announces

LUCKNOW (RAJEEV SHARMA): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday announced that Noida International Airport, located in Jewar, will be renamed Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar, following approval of the proposal by the state Cabinet.

Making the announcement while addressing the media, Adityanath said the Cabinet had approved the new name as a mark of gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the airport project, which he described as a significant contribution to Uttar Pradesh.

The chief minister said the airport would become a major aviation hub and emerge as the largest airport in Uttar Pradesh, strengthening the state’s transport infrastructure and connectivity.

The renaming decision comes as the Jewar airport project advances towards its broader objective of improving air connectivity in the National Capital Region (NCR) and accommodating rising passenger demand.

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the airport on March 28 this year. The facility subsequently recorded its first flight landing on June 15, when an IndiGo aircraft arrived from Lucknow.

The airport has been developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Switzerland-based Zurich Airport International AG, in collaboration with Noida International Airport Limited, the implementing agency representing the Uttar Pradesh government.

The first phase of the project was developed at an estimated cost of Rs 11,282 crore. It was designed to handle approximately 1.2 crore passengers annually, with provisions to increase capacity to seven crore passengers a year as the airport expands in the coming years.

The facility features a 3,900-metre runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, along with modern navigation and landing systems. Its Instrument Landing System (ILS), installed at both ends of the runway, allows aircraft to approach from either direction depending on wind conditions.

Beyond aviation infrastructure, the project has been planned as a multimodal transport hub, with links to road networks and other transport systems intended to improve access for passengers travelling from Noida, Greater Noida, Delhi and surrounding areas.

The airport also incorporates advanced safety and operational technologies designed to protect passengers, aircraft and critical infrastructure.

With its planned expansion and regional transport connections, the Jewar facility is expected to play a significant role in meeting the region’s long-term aviation requirements. The renaming announcement adds a new dimension to the project as Uttar Pradesh continues to expand its infrastructure network and strengthen its position as a major aviation and economic centre.
