Jason McKay Sentenced Again to Life in Prison for 2017 Murder of Wife

Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Nearly nine years after the brutal killing of his wife, Jason McKay has been sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 17 years. This decision, handed down by Justice Beverly Klatt at the Court of King’s Bench on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, mirrors the original sentence McKay received in 2020 before a successful appeal led to a retrial. McKay formally pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on January 23, 2026, marking the end of a long and painful legal journey for the victim’s family.

The case dates back to September 2017, when 33-year-old Jenny was murdered in her home on the 200 block of Angus Street in Regina. According to the agreed statement of facts, McKay attacked his wife with multiple knives between the late hours of September 5 and the early morning of September 6. The attack was exceptionally violent; Jenny was stabbed 24 times, with investigators noting that several of the wounds were inflicted post-mortem.

Justice Klatt’s decision to maintain the 17-year parole ineligibility period was influenced by the sheer brutality of the crime and McKay’s history of violence. While the defense argued for a shorter 12-year window due to the eventual guilty plea, the Crown had pushed for 18 years. Ultimately, the judge found that the violent nature of the murder and McKay’s criminal past warranted the extended period. Crown prosecutor Adam Breker expressed gratitude that the court upheld the original sentencing standard, noting that while the process took much longer than usual, it has finally reached a conclusion.

McKay has remained in custody since his initial arrest in September 2017. Appearing in court on Tuesday in a grey jumpsuit, he remained silent as the sentence was delivered. With credit for time already served, McKay will officially become eligible to apply for parole in 2043. The resolution brings a sense of finality to a case that has haunted the Regina community and the victim’s loved ones for nearly a decade.
