Jaishankar to Meet US Secretary of State Rubio Amid Trade and Strategic Talks at UNGA

New York (Rajeev Sharma): India’s External Affairs Minister, Subramanyam Jaishankar, is scheduled to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio today at 11:00 am EDT (8:30 pm IST) in New York, according to the US State Department’s public agenda. The meeting is set on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, where Jaishankar will hold multiple bilateral discussions with global leaders.

The talks assume heightened importance as trade relations between the two nations face tension. Washington recently imposed hefty tariffs, including a 50% levy on key Indian exports, citing India’s ongoing energy trade with Russia. While New Delhi has rejected these tariffs, officials have described trade discussions as “positive” and “forward-looking,” leaving room for potential compromises. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is also in the US, leading a trade delegation focused on advancing a long-pending Bilateral Trade Agreement designed to enhance market access and stabilize economic relations.

Beyond trade, Jaishankar and Rubio are expected to deliberate on strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, covering maritime security, defence collaboration, and broader global security issues. Both countries have repeatedly emphasized their shared commitment to maintaining a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
