New Delhi (National Times): In a significant political development, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar has officially resigned from the post of Vice President of India. The resignation, effective immediately, was published via notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday, July 22.
Citing health concerns and medical advice as the primary reason, Dhankhar submitted his resignation under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution, which allows for voluntary resignation from the office of Vice President.
In his heartfelt resignation letter addressed to the Hon’ble President of India, Dhankhar wrote, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately.” He went on to express deep gratitude to the President for her unwavering support and the harmonious working relationship they shared during his tenure.
Dhankhar also extended his appreciation to the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, acknowledging the cooperation and invaluable support he received throughout his time in office. “I have learned much during my time in office,” he noted.
He fondly recalled the warmth and affection shown by Members of Parliament, calling it an experience he would cherish forever. He also expressed thankfulness for the insights and experiences he gained as Vice President in what he described as “our great democracy.”
Reflecting on India’s development, Dhankhar highlighted the nation’s rapid economic growth and transformative journey in recent years. “It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and exponential development,” he wrote.
In his concluding remarks, he said, “As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.”
The notification was signed and released by Govind Mohan, Home Secretary, making the resignation official and public.
This unexpected move marks the end of Jagdeep Dhankhar’s tenure as the 14th Vice President of India, a role he assumed in August 2022. His resignation triggers the constitutional process to elect the next Vice President of the Republic.
His resignation has been accepted.
