Tehran/Washington (International News Desk): Iran has reportedly closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz following escalating tensions with Israel over attacks on Lebanon, according to Iranian state media, raising concerns over global energy supplies and regional stability.
A senior Iranian military official, Seyed Majid Mousavi, warned that any aggression against Lebanon would be treated as aggression against Iran. In a statement, he said Iranian forces were preparing a “heavy response,” though no operational details were disclosed.
The development comes even as conflicting claims emerged over a ceasefire involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Officials from all sides suggested that a two-week truce had been agreed upon after more than a month of hostilities, though the terms remain unclear.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described the outcome as a “decisive military victory” for American and Israeli forces, asserting that Iran’s military capabilities had been significantly diminished. In contrast, Iranian authorities claimed they had forced both the US and Israel to accept their conditions, portraying the outcome as a strategic success.
Despite the ceasefire announcement, reports indicated that drone and missile strikes continued to hit parts of Iran and Gulf Arab states, underscoring the fragile and uncertain nature of the truce.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route, is expected to heighten tensions further and could have significant implications for international markets and security dynamics in the region.
