India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train to Be Launched in January 2026

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Indian Railways is set to begin a new chapter in long-distance rail travel with the launch of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train later this month. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the much-awaited sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train will be introduced as part of the New Year initiatives for passengers.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is expected to flag off the inaugural service in the second half of January 2026. The first Vande Bharat Sleeper train will operate on the Guwahati–Howrah route, strengthening rail connectivity between the Northeast and eastern India. Designed specifically for overnight journeys, the train will feature fully air-conditioned sleeper coaches, offering enhanced comfort, modern interiors, and advanced safety systems.

The train set will consist of 16 coaches, including AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier, and AC First Class compartments, with a total passenger capacity of over 800 travelers. Built under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the sleeper variant retains the high-speed capability and modern technology that the Vande Bharat series is known for. With this launch, Indian Railways aims to provide passengers a premium, faster, and more comfortable alternative for long-distance overnight travel, expanding the Vande Bharat fleet beyond daytime services.
