Indian Railways to Launch Airport-Style Baggage Checks, Pilot in Prayagraj Division

New Delhi: Indian Railways is preparing to introduce stricter baggage regulations, bringing in airport-style security checks for train passengers. The initiative will begin as a pilot project in the Prayagraj division, where luggage will be weighed at stations before travelers are permitted to enter platforms. Passengers carrying excess baggage will face fines.

The pilot program will be rolled out at major stations, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, and Etawah. To implement the system, electronic weighing machines are being installed at the entry gates of these stations.

According to the new rules, the luggage allowance will depend on the class of travel. First AC passengers can carry up to 70 kilograms, Second AC up to 50 kilograms, Third AC and Sleeper Class up to 40 kilograms, and General or Second Sitting up to 35 kilograms. In addition, passengers will be allowed an extra 10 kilograms without booking. Anything beyond that must be declared at the station’s luggage counter. If undeclared, travelers will be charged 1.5 times the standard luggage rate as penalty.

Officials said the revised policy is intended to curb overcrowding inside train coaches and ensure passenger safety. Overloaded compartments not only cause inconvenience during boarding but also increase risks in emergencies. Authorities believe that the checks will help make train journeys more organized, smoother, and safer for passengers.
