According to an official statement, the families of the deceased will receive a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. In addition, those seriously injured in the incident will be compensated with Rs 2.5 lakh, while those with minor injuries will receive Rs 1 lakh.
Geeta, a worker at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital, where the victims were admitted, shared details of the tragic event. She revealed that between 10:00 and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, 15 bodies and 10 to 12 injured individuals were brought to the hospital. “There were around 15 dead bodies and 10 to 12 injured people who were brought to the LNJP hospital. Among the deceased, three were children,” Geeta said in a statement to ANI.
The stampede occurred on Saturday night around 10 p.m. at the New Delhi Railway Station, as thousands of devotees were traveling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival. The station became severely overcrowded, leading to the tragic incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railway, KPS Malhotra, explained that the stampede took place on platform 14, where the Prayagraj Express was stationed. Additionally, delays in the departures of the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani caused congestion at platforms 12, 13, and 14, worsening the situation.
In response to the tragic incident, President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sorrow and extended her condolences to the families of the victims. “Deeply anguished to know about the loss of lives in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” President Murmu wrote in a post on X.
The incident has left the nation in mourning as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the stampede and take steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
