Indian High Commission Warns Students in Canada Against Fraudulent Calls and Emails

Toronto (Rajeev Sharma) : The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has issued an important advisory for Indian nationals living in Canada, especially international students, following a surge in fraudulent calls and emails impersonating Canadian authorities.

The advisory comes amid multiple complaints from Indian citizens and persons of Indian origin who have received fake communications regarding visa status, immigration issues, job offers, or refunds of application fees. In many of these cases, victims were falsely accused of being involved in criminal or fraudulent activities. The intent was to intimidate them into sharing personal information or transferring money under duress.

International students have emerged as the primary targets of these scams. The High Commission has urged the Indian community to remain alert and not fall for such deceptive tactics. They have advised people to independently verify any such communication with the concerned Canadian authorities before taking any action.

People are also encouraged to avoid responding to suspicious emails or phone calls and to report such incidents promptly to the local police and relevant Canadian agencies.
