National Times Bureau :- Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh improved his own national record in the men’s 3000m non-Olympic event at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix. On Tuesday, he clocked 7 minutes 34.49 seconds, surpassing his previous record of 7:38.26 set at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational earlier this year in February.
The 27-year-old was competing in his first European track race. The event, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold level, was won by Kenya’s Kipsang Mathew Kipchumba with a timing of 7:33.23. Mexico’s Eduardo Herrera (7:33.58), Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo (7:33.93), and Uruguay’s Valentin Soka (7:34.28) finished second, third, and fourth, respectively.
Gulveer also holds national records in the men’s 5000m (12:59.77) and 10,000m (27:00.22) events and is the current Asian champion in both distances. In May, he won a gold medal at the Mahadipi Championship. He has already qualified for the men’s 5000m race at the World Athletics Championships scheduled in Tokyo from September 13 to 21.
