New Delhi (National Times): In the wake of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated a significant military drill dubbed Exercise Aakraman (meaning “Attack”) in the central sector near the Line of Control (LoC). This extensive operation features the IAF’s primary combat fleet, including the advanced Rafale fighter jets stationed at Ambala and Hashimara bases.
The exercise showcased heightened operational readiness, with both combat and transport aircraft conducting sorties throughout Thursday night. Aircraft equipped with Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) maintained surveillance, monitoring enemy movements near the border. Reports also suggest that Pakistani fighter aircraft were active across the border during the same period, further intensifying the situation.
Military Forces on High Alert
Following the attack in Pahalgam, India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force have elevated their alert levels. Surveillance and security checks have been stepped up across the western border and down to the Arabian Sea. Rafale jets are now actively patrolling the skies, while ground forces are intensifying operations in border villages, targeting known terror hideouts.
Army Chief Assesses Ground Situation in Srinagar
Amid the rising tensions, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi arrived in Srinagar on Friday. Accompanied by Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava of the 15 Corps and the Victor Force Commander, General Dwivedi is scheduled to chair a key security meeting to assess the current posture along the LoC and discuss future countermeasures. He is also expected to visit the scene of the Pahalgam attack as a show of solidarity and resolve.
Pahalgam Attack: A Grim Reminder
The Pahalgam incident on April 22 resulted in the death of 26 civilians, primarily tourists, making it one of the most serious terror attacks since the scrapping of Article 370 in 2019. While the government has yet to issue an official casualty count, the incident has prompted immediate and large-scale security crackdowns. Search operations are underway, and the once-busy tourist area of Pahalgam now lies deserted under tight security watch.
