India Withholds Pakistani Government’s ‘X’ Account Amid Pahalgam Attack Backlash

New Delhi (National Times): Just days after a brutal terrorist ambush in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 27 lives, most of them holidaying tourists, India has moved to restrict access to the Government of Pakistan’s official account on X (formerly Twitter). The measure, announced late Saturday by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), signals New Delhi’s deep frustration with Islamabad’s perceived inaction against cross‑border militancy.

On the afternoon of April 22, heavily armed militants descended on the serene Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam—a spot often dubbed “mini Switzerland” for its alpine beauty—opening fire on families from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and two foreign nationals. Eyewitnesses reported that tourists were first questioned about their religion before being shot; then Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short overseas engagements to oversee the response. Within 48 hours, India suspended its Indus Waters Treaty obligations, halted SAARC visas for Pakistanis, and sealed the Atari–Wagah border crossing.

In the most recent diplomatic and digital blow, MeitY has “withheld” the Pakistani government’s verified X profile, meaning users within India will no longer see its posts or be able to interact with its content. A spokesperson explained that the step follows repeated appearances on the platform of Pakistan-based extremist propaganda and the hosting of official statements that downplay or deflect responsibility for terrorism emanating from across the Line of Control.
