India Will Not Bow to Pressure: PM Modi Reaffirms Commitment to Farmers Amid Tariff Tensions with US

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a clear and defiant message to the global stage on Thursday, asserting that India will always prioritize the interests of its farmers, regardless of the international consequences. His remarks came during the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference, held in honor of the legendary agricultural scientist known as the father of India’s Green Revolution.

“In our journey of development, the welfare of our farmers, fishermen, and dairy workers remains non-negotiable,” PM Modi said. “India will never compromise on their interests. Even if it comes at a cost, I am fully prepared to face it. India is prepared to face it.”

The Prime Minister’s statement came at a critical juncture, just days after the United States announced an additional 25 percent tariff on certain Indian imports—a move widely seen as a response to India’s continued oil trade with Russia. The added duties have heightened trade tensions between the two nations, prompting concerns over the future of bilateral economic ties.

Though Modi did not directly mention the tariffs or the U.S. in his speech, the timing and tone of his remarks strongly suggest a strategic response to international criticism. He emphasized that India’s agricultural backbone cannot be compromised in the face of external pressure.

India has maintained that its decisions on global trade, particularly energy imports, are guided by national interest and the need to secure resources for its vast population. The government has repeatedly stressed that farmers play a central role in the country’s economy and identity, and their welfare will continue to be a top policy priority.

Modi also used the platform to pay tribute to Dr. M.S. Swaminathan’s legacy, highlighting the importance of agricultural innovation and self-reliance. He reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable farming, better infrastructure, and stronger support systems for rural communities.

As global economic dynamics continue to shift, India’s message is now clear: it is ready to defend its domestic priorities, even if that means bearing the brunt of geopolitical headwinds.
