New Delhi: India on Sunday expressed deep concern over the rapidly unfolding situation in Venezuela, following the United States’ military action that resulted in the detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, while stopping short of directly criticising Washington’s operation.
In a carefully worded statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi is closely watching developments in the South American nation and reiterated its long-standing position that conflicts should be resolved through peaceful means. The MEA called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue to maintain regional peace and stability.
“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the ministry said, emphasising India’s consistent support for peaceful resolution of international disputes.
India also underlined its concern for the safety and welfare of Venezuelan citizens. The MEA reaffirmed New Delhi’s support for the well-being of the people of Venezuela and urged all stakeholders to address the situation through dialogue to avoid further instability in the region.
The statement came a day after the United States launched large-scale military strikes in Caracas and detained President Maduro, triggering political uncertainty and security disruptions across Venezuela. US President Donald Trump described the operation as a decisive display of American power, stating that Maduro was in custody and that US authorities would oversee Venezuela until what he termed a safe and orderly transition was ensured.
Following the developments, India issued a travel advisory advising its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela. Indian nationals currently in the country have been asked to remain vigilant, limit their movement and stay in close contact with the Indian Embassy in Caracas.
The MEA said the Indian mission is actively engaging with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance. Indian nationals have also been advised to register their contact details with the embassy to enable emergency support if required.
The crisis has sparked concern across Latin America. Colombia has moved to reinforce its border with Venezuela amid fears of a possible refugee influx, while Brazil, while urging calm, warned that the US action could have destabilising consequences for the region.
Reports from Caracas indicated scenes of panic and confusion, with videos circulating on social media showing residents fleeing explosions and grappling with widespread power outages. Several provinces reportedly faced communication disruptions, while shortages of food and fuel further aggravated the situation.
India said it will continue to closely monitor the situation as it develops.
