National Times Bureau, May 4, 2025: India is set to introduce chip-embedded biometric e-passports across the country starting May 2025. This move aims to revolutionize travel security, cut immigration wait times, and modernize identification systems.
Each new e-passport will feature a secure RFID chip that stores the holder’s personal details, including fingerprints and facial recognition data. These passports conform to international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), ensuring global acceptance and smoother travel for Indian citizens.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the chip is encrypted to prevent tampering and unauthorized access. This leap in technology is expected to minimize identity theft and passport fraud. After a successful pilot program in select regions, the nationwide rollout is scheduled to begin next month.
The India Security Press in Nashik is managing production and distribution. Once operational, the biometric e-passports will speed up identity verification at immigration counters while securing sensitive traveler data with advanced encryption.
Officials emphasized that the passports represent a key step in India’s mission to digitize public services and upgrade its travel infrastructure. Travelers will benefit from faster border clearance, improved document security, and easier international mobility.
