India to Implement Nationwide Caller Name Display (CNAP) by December to Combat Rising Fraud

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): India is set to launch the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service nationwide by December 2025, in a bid to bolster mobile security and counter the escalating threat of cyber fraud. Following successful trials in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has instructed all telecom operators to prepare their networks for nationwide activation by November 30, with full-scale implementation scheduled for December 15.

The CNAP feature will display the verified name of the caller, sourced directly from official telecom KYC records, providing users with reliable caller identification, akin to Truecaller, but backed by government-regulated data. This initiative comes at a critical juncture, as India grapples with an unprecedented surge in cybercrime, including impersonation scams, phishing attempts, and fraudulent mobile applications, resulting in significant financial losses for citizens and businesses nationwide.

By enabling recipients to verify the authentic identity of callers, the government aims to substantially reduce the effectiveness of fraudulent phone calls and enhance public trust in digital communication. The nationwide rollout of CNAP marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to combat digital fraud and enhance consumer safety.
