Manchester, July 27, 2025 — India pulled off a gripping draw against England in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, denying the hosts a decisive series win. Starting Day 5 under immense pressure and trailing by 311 runs, India showcased exceptional resilience and batting discipline to shut the door on England’s hopes of victory.
Shubman Gill continued his remarkable run as captain, scoring his fourth century of the series. His 103 not only steadied India early but also put him in elite company with Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar, who are the only other captains in Test history to have four centuries in a single series. Gill also surpassed former skipper Virat Kohli in this feat.
KL Rahul contributed a crucial 90, and together with Gill, laid a solid foundation in the middle order. But it was the unbroken fifth-wicket partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar that turned the game into a deadlock. Jadeja remained unbeaten on 107, while Sundar was equally dogged with an unbeaten 101. Their stand spanned more than four sessions, consuming over 90 overs and deflating England’s aggressive intent.
England, despite having posted a mammoth 669 in the first innings and bowling India out for 358, couldn’t find enough breakthroughs on a pitch that had flattened out considerably. Stokes was named player of the match for his all-round efforts, including a commanding 141 and six wickets, but the dropped catches and tiring bowling unit cost England dearly on the final day.
India ended their second innings on 425/4 in 143 overs, securing a lead of 11 but never pressing for a win. The draw keeps the five-match series alive at 2–1 in England’s favour heading into the final Test at The Oval.
The match was seen as a mental victory for India, with the lower middle order showing tremendous grit. The performance was also a reminder of the team’s ability to absorb pressure, even in foreign conditions.
As the teams head to The Oval, England will need to reassess their bowling resources and possibly rest some fatigued pacers. India, on the other hand, carry renewed belief and momentum into the series finale.
