New Delhi, August 23, 2025: The Department of Posts has announced a temporary halt on booking postal articles to the United States starting August 25, 2025, citing recent changes in American customs regulations. Only letters, documents, and gift parcels valued up to USD 100 will continue to be accepted until further notice.
The Ministry of Communications said the move follows Executive Order No. 14324 issued by the U.S. Administration on July 30, 2025. The order withdraws the duty-free exemption for goods valued up to USD 800, effective August 29, bringing all postal consignments under the International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) tariff framework.
Transport carriers handling U.S.-bound shipments have expressed their inability to process parcels beyond the deadline, citing operational and technical gaps in duty collection and remittance. Despite guidelines issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) earlier this month, several procedures remain unclear, forcing India Post to pause most categories of shipments.
“In view of the circumstances, the Department of Posts has decided to temporarily suspend all bookings for postal articles to the U.S., except for the exempt categories. The situation is being closely monitored in coordination with CBP and USPS, and services will be restored at the earliest opportunity,” the ministry said in a statement.
Customers whose parcels cannot be dispatched under the revised rules may apply for a refund of postage. The department has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and assured that all efforts are underway to normalize operations quickly.
