India Enters Global AI Race with Indigenous ‘SARVAM AI’ Vision Under ₹10,372-Crore IndiaAI Mission

New Delhi ( Gurpreet Singh): India has intensified its drive toward artificial intelligence self-reliance with the development of an indigenous AI framework being promoted as “SARVAM AI,” under the government’s flagship IndiaAI Mission. The initiative aims to create large language models and advanced AI systems trained on Indian datasets to serve citizens in multiple Indian languages while ensuring national data security.

According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the IndiaAI Mission has been approved with a financial outlay of ₹10,372 crore to expand high-performance computing capacity, support domestic AI startups, and build foundational AI models within the country. These systems are intended for use in critical sectors such as governance, education, healthcare, agriculture, and the judicial system.

A key pillar of SARVAM AI is data sovereignty, ensuring that sensitive Indian data is processed and stored within national borders rather than on foreign servers. The platform is also designed to prioritize India’s linguistic diversity, with plans to support more than 22 scheduled Indian languages, addressing a major limitation of most Western AI platforms that remain heavily English-focused.

Technology experts believe the initiative will reduce India’s dependence on foreign AI platforms developed in the United States and China, while enabling affordable and scalable AI solutions for public services. The government is simultaneously building a national AI computing grid and fostering public-private partnerships with Indian technology firms and research institutions to accelerate development and deployment.

With SARVAM AI, India is positioning itself not merely as a global IT services provider but as a creator of sovereign artificial intelligence technology, signaling a strategic shift in global digital power and placing the country among the emerging challengers in the worldwide AI race.
