India, Canada Strike Intelligence-Sharing Deal on Crime and Terror

Toronto/New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): In a move that could redefine South Asian geopolitics and internal security dynamics, Canada and India have entered into a landmark intelligence-sharing agreement aimed at tackling transnational crime and terrorism.

The agreement, finalized under the leadership of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, represents a sharp policy shift and is widely seen as an attempt to restore diplomatic warmth following a year of tense relations over the Khalistan issue.

“Our law enforcement needs tools and cooperation across borders. This is about empowering our protectors and taking the fight to those who hide behind jurisdictional gaps,” said PM Carney in a statement.

Indian intelligence officials say this new cooperation will enable real-time exchange of data on criminal syndicates, terror operatives, and extortion rackets that have leveraged legal safe havens in both countries.

Friction Among Extremist Groups

Notably, the development has caused unrest among Khalistani groups operating within Canada. Intelligence sources say that these elements feel “betrayed” by Ottawa and worry that the agreement could result in deportations, legal crackdowns, and surveillance.

This marks a strategic win for New Delhi, which has long pushed Ottawa to rein in extremist voices accused of supporting separatism in Punjab while residing abroad.

Diplomatic Implications

This intelligence-sharing pact could act as a reset button in India-Canada relations, with broader implications for trade, diaspora ties, and counter-terror frameworks. Observers believe it may also influence how Western nations approach intelligence partnerships with India in the future.

More announcements are expected in the coming weeks, with bilateral security meetings planned to establish standard operating procedures for intelligence flows and response coordination.
