New Delhi, May 2, 2025 – The Indian government has blocked access to the official YouTube and Instagram accounts of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif within Indian territory, citing national security concerns following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
Users trying to access Sharif’s YouTube page from India are now shown a message reading, “This content is currently unavailable in this country because of a government order related to national security or public order.” His Instagram profile also displays a restriction notice stating that the content is hidden due to a legal request from the Indian government.
The development comes just days after a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region on April 22, in which 26 civilians were killed. The attack has significantly worsened India-Pakistan relations, with India blaming Pakistan-based terror outfits for orchestrating the assault.
India had earlier blocked 16 Pakistani YouTube news channels such as Geo News, ARY News, and Dawn News, along with several other social media accounts accused of spreading anti-India misinformation. Prominent Pakistani public figures, including actors Mahira Khan and Hania Aamir, have also seen their Instagram accounts restricted in India.
The move is part of a broader digital crackdown by India targeting platforms that, according to authorities, promote cross-border propaganda and content that could disrupt national harmony. Officials said these restrictions were taken in view of maintaining public order and ensuring no glorification or sympathy is extended toward terrorist activities.
This is one of the most high-profile digital actions taken by India and includes the blocking of accounts belonging to senior Pakistani leaders such as Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
With diplomatic tensions escalating, the digital fallout adds a new dimension to the ongoing standoff between India and Pakistan.
