Historic Milestone: 17 Women Cadets Graduate from NDA’s First Co-Ed Batch

Pune, May 30, 2025: In a defining moment for gender inclusivity in the Indian Armed Forces, the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune, celebrated the graduation of its first co-educational batch, which included 17 pioneering women cadets. These cadets passed out alongside over 300 male counterparts from the 148th course, marking a historic chapter in the institution’s illustrious history.

The landmark inclusion of women at the NDA came after the Supreme Court’s 2021 order that paved the way for their admission. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) thereafter opened applications to female candidates starting with the 2022 intake. Over the past three years, these women underwent identical training in academics, physical conditioning, and leadership, aligning with the rigorous standards set for male cadets.

The Passing Out Parade was held at the iconic Khetrapal Parade Ground and reviewed by General V.K. Singh (Retd.), the former Chief of Army Staff and current Governor of Mizoram. Applauding the women graduates, he described them as symbols of “Naari Shakti” and emphasized their role in driving inclusive progress in defence services.

Among the graduating cadets, Shriti Daksh stood out by securing the top position in the Arts stream, becoming the first woman to achieve this distinction at the NDA. She credited her success to discipline and consistency, noting that the training was equally tough for all cadets, regardless of gender.

The graduation of these 17 women cadets not only sets a precedent for future batches but also reaffirms India’s commitment to empowering women in all sectors, including the military.
