Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): Several parts of Himachal Pradesh are likely to experience intense rainfall on Tuesday, prompting the weather department to issue alerts across 10 districts. Authorities have advised residents and visitors to exercise caution as persistent showers could increase the risk of landslides and sudden rises in water levels.
Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur have been placed under an Orange Alert, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated locations. A Yellow Alert has been issued for Una, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kullu, Solan and Shimla.
No specific rainfall warning has been issued for Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.
The administration has appealed to people to stay away from rivers, streams and other water bodies during periods of heavy rain. Travel to vulnerable mountain areas should also be avoided unless necessary, while people have been advised to follow local weather and administrative advisories.
The current spell of unsettled weather is expected to persist until August 22. Rainfall is likely to remain light to moderate in several areas, although isolated intense spells cannot be ruled out. The IMD expects monsoon activity to gradually decline from August 23.
The state has so far received below-normal rainfall during the ongoing monsoon. Data from the IMD shows that Himachal Pradesh recorded 469.6 mm of rain between June 1 and August 17, compared with the normal 519.5 mm during the same period.
The rainfall deficit currently stands at around 10 per cent. Despite the overall shortfall, the latest forecast has prompted authorities to remain alert in view of possible landslides, waterlogging and other rain-related disruptions in vulnerable areas.
