Himachal Braces for Wet Spell as Weather System Returns; IMD Warns of Heavy Showers from July 18

Himachal’s Monsoon Disaster: Over 300 Lives Lost, Economy Bears Massive Blow

Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): After enjoying nearly a week of largely dry weather, Himachal Pradesh is preparing for another active phase of the monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall from July 18 onward. Officials have cautioned that the fresh spell could bring intense showers, increasing the possibility of flash floods, landslides and overflowing seasonal streams in vulnerable regions.

According to meteorologists, a new Western Disturbance is expected to influence the state from Thursday afternoon, gradually strengthening rainfall activity over the following days. While the weather is likely to remain mostly clear until then, cloud cover is expected to build up before showers begin across several districts.

Orange Alert for peak rainfall period

The IMD has placed parts of Himachal under an Orange Alert for July 20 and 21, warning of very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. A Yellow Alert has also been issued for July 18 and 19, indicating the likelihood of heavy rain in several districts before the more intense phase begins.

Authorities have advised residents, pilgrims and tourists to remain cautious, especially in areas known for landslides and near rivers, streams and nullahs that can swell rapidly during heavy rain.

Heat and humidity dominate before rain returns

The temporary break in monsoon activity has caused temperatures to rise across much of the state. Daytime conditions have become warmer, while increased moisture in the atmosphere has added to the discomfort in lower-altitude districts.

Weather data shows that maximum temperatures have crossed the 30-degree Celsius mark in a dozen towns, with Una recording the highest temperature at around 37°C. The combination of sunshine and humidity has made afternoons particularly uncomfortable in the plains and foothill regions.

Monsoon expected to regain momentum

Meteorological experts say the upcoming weather system is likely to restore monsoon intensity after several days of subdued rainfall. The renewed showers are expected to improve moisture conditions across the state and bring down temperatures that have climbed during the recent dry spell.

Disaster management authorities have been asked to remain prepared, while local administrations are monitoring areas vulnerable to flooding and slope failures. Travellers have also been urged to check weather updates before heading to popular hill destinations.

With the monsoon set to regain strength, Himachal Pradesh is expected to witness a sharp transition from hot and humid conditions to persistent rainfall over the next few days, marking the beginning of another active phase of the rainy season.
