Vancouver (Rajeev Sharma): Veteran Vancouver Police Department officer, prominent anti-gang advocate and KidsPlay Youth Foundation founder Kal Dosanjh has been arrested and charged with multiple criminal offences following a lengthy covert police investigation.
According to Vancouver police and publicly available court records, Dosanjh faces four counts of fraud over $5,000, four counts of theft over $5,000 and one count of breach of trust by a public officer. His co-accused, Sarabjit Singh Gill, faces three counts of fraud over $5,000 and three counts of theft over $5,000. Court records identify alleged offences dating from December 2017 through July 2025.
The charges represent a significant development involving an officer who has spent more than two decades with the VPD and has developed a public profile through anti-gang initiatives and youth outreach. Dosanjh founded the Surrey-based KidsPlay Youth Foundation in 2015, an organization whose stated mission includes helping keep young people away from gangs, drugs and crime.
Vancouver police have said the case follows a covert investigation lasting approximately two and a half years. Police also executed a search warrant at the KidsPlay Foundation’s offices Thursday. Officers were additionally seen at a residence identified in court documents as being associated with Dosanjh, where boxes and other materials were removed. The specific allegations underlying the charges have not been established in court. Police have not publicly released all of the evidence gathered during the investigation, and details contained in the criminal allegations should not be interpreted as findings of guilt.
The Vancouver Police Department is scheduled to provide further information at a news conference Friday morning. VPD Chief Constable Steve Rai and Superintendent Mike Ritchie are expected to address the investigation, the charges and the circumstances surrounding the arrests. Any statements made by police regarding alleged conduct will remain allegations unless proven through the court process. Dosanjh, through his lawyer, has maintained that he is innocent and has committed no crimes. His defence position will be considered as the criminal proceedings continue.
The case has drawn heightened public attention because Dosanjh’s professional career and community work have centred heavily on policing, anti-gang advocacy and youth programs. However, a criminal charge is not a finding of guilt. Dosanjh and Gill are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
