Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s push to strengthen its value-added agriculture sector has received a significant boost as meal delivery company HelloFresh prepares to expand its operations through a major investment in Calgary. Backed by federal and provincial support, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities while reinforcing the province’s food processing industry.
The company, operating in Canada through GDE Grocery Delivery E-Services Canada Inc., has secured conditional approval for an Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit worth up to $2.3 million for its nearly $20-million processing facility. In addition, the project has been awarded up to $1.3 million under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership’s Emerging Opportunities Program, which encourages innovation and business expansion in the agri-food sector.
The newly established 50,000-square-foot kitchen and distribution centre will produce ready-to-eat meals under the Factor brand, offering consumers a range of diet-focused options. The company has announced that ingredients, including meat and fresh produce, will be sourced from Alberta farmers and suppliers, providing a direct boost to the local agricultural economy.
Construction on the facility began in mid-2025 and has now been completed, with commercial operations expected to support approximately 400 permanent positions along with more than 250 temporary jobs created during the development phase. Company officials said Calgary’s strategic location, skilled workforce and supportive business climate made it the preferred destination for its western Canadian expansion.
Government representatives described the investment as another example of Alberta’s growing appeal for agri-food businesses, noting that targeted incentives and competitive policies continue to attract large-scale projects that strengthen domestic food production and supply chain resilience across Canada.
