Heavy Rains Continue to Batter Himachal; Orange Alert in Several Districts, Roads Closed After Fresh Landslides

Himachal’s Monsoon Disaster: Over 300 Lives Lost, Economy Bears Massive Blow

Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): Himachal Pradesh continued to grapple with intense monsoon activity on Wednesday as persistent rain disrupted normal life across several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that wet weather will continue over the coming days, with an Orange Alert issued for heavy rainfall in vulnerable regions and a Yellow Alert for many other parts of the state.

Authorities have cautioned residents and tourists against travelling through landslide-prone stretches, riverbanks, and low-lying areas, as the possibility of flash floods, falling boulders, and road blockages remains high.

The latest spell of rain has affected connectivity in multiple districts, where landslides and overflowing seasonal streams have disrupted traffic movement. Public Works Department (PWD) teams and local administration are working to restore blocked routes, while emergency personnel remain on standby in sensitive locations.

One of the major incidents was reported from Kullu district, where a sudden surge in water flow damaged infrastructure after heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas. In parts of Shimla district, vehicles were damaged after trees and debris fell onto roads, while Chamba also reported rain-related accidents during the ongoing monsoon spell.

Officials said that water levels in several streams and rivulets have risen sharply due to continuous rainfall. Although rescue teams are monitoring the situation, residents living close to vulnerable water channels have been advised to remain alert.

The weather office has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across large parts of the state until July 10, with isolated areas likely to witness very heavy showers. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected in several districts.

The administration has appealed to people to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during periods of intense rainfall. Tourists have also been advised to check weather and road conditions before planning journeys to hill destinations.

Meanwhile, temperatures have remained below normal in many parts of the state due to cloud cover and continuous rainfall, providing relief from heat but increasing the risk of weather-related hazards.

Disaster management authorities have urged citizens to follow official advisories, stay away from swollen rivers and streams, and immediately report any signs of landslides or flooding to local authorities. Emergency response teams have been instructed to remain prepared as the active monsoon conditions are expected to persist over the next few days.
