Heavy Rain Triggers Fresh Highway Washouts Across Haida Gwaii and Northwest B.C.

Haida Gwaii, B.C (Rajeev Sharma): Persistent heavy rainfall has led to continued highway washouts in Haida Gwaii and parts of northwest British Columbia, disrupting travel and isolating several communities as repair crews assess the damage.

Authorities say sections of Highway 16 on Haida Gwaii have been severely affected, forcing closures between key points with no alternate routes available. The washouts have cut off north–south movement on the islands, impacting access between communities including Tlell, Lawn Hill, Skidegate and Daajing Giids. Local officials and volunteers are assisting stranded motorists and residents while monitoring conditions on affected stretches.

Environment Canada has warned that intense rainfall associated with a powerful weather system is likely to continue, increasing the risk of further flooding, landslides and road damage. The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued flood alerts for Haida Gwaii and the North Coast, citing rapidly rising water levels in rivers and streams.

On the mainland, a lengthy stretch of Highway 16 between Prince Rupert and Terrace has also been impacted by washouts, cutting off a major transportation corridor with no immediate detour in place. Transportation officials say crews are working as conditions allow, but reopening timelines will depend on weather improvements and safety assessments.

Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flooded roadways and rely only on official updates for information on road conditions and emergency support.
