Heavy Rain Leaves Chandigarh Waterlogged, Vehicles Submerged

Chandigarh, August 19, 2025: Chandigarh witnessed heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, causing severe waterlogging across the city. Several vehicles were left stranded or partially submerged as roads turned into streams. The sudden downpour disrupted normal life, with rainwater flooding areas from PGI to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The rainfall, which began around 3 p.m., quickly inundated key city spots. The Rose Garden in Sector-16 was submerged, and the water current spread into the nearby Punjab Kala Bhawan’s parking lot. The Punjab and Haryana High Court road was blocked after cars were trapped in rising water. Even the High Court’s parking area had vehicles floating in pools of rainwater. The Punjab-Haryana Secretariat was also affected by flooding.

Major traffic disruptions were reported at the Sector-15/11 underpass, which was completely submerged, while the Sector-17/18 road experienced heavy waterlogging, leading to traffic jams.

According to the Meteorological Department, Chandigarh recorded 35 mm of rainfall after 3 p.m. The downpour lasted for about an hour but left the city grappling with chaos. Interestingly, while Sector-9 registered 35 mm rain, only traces of rainfall were recorded at the weather office in Sector-39.

The day had started with clear skies and sunshine, but the sudden shift in weather left residents surprised. The Met Department has now issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall between August 22 and 24, warning citizens of possible disruptions.
