Heavy Rain and Flash Floods Kill 45 Across Afghanistan and Pakistan

Islamabad (Internation News Desk): Severe weather, including torrential rain, thunderstorms, and flash floods, has killed at least 45 people across Afghanistan and Pakistan over the last few days. Disaster management officials in both countries confirmed on Monday, March 30, 2026, that the relentless storms have caused widespread destruction to homes, infrastructure, and livestock. In Afghanistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) reported 28 fatalities and 49 injuries across 13 provinces since Thursday. Meanwhile, across the border in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, at least 17 people have died and 56 others have been wounded in weather-related incidents since Wednesday.

The impact in Afghanistan has been particularly devastating due to poor infrastructure and the prevalence of mud houses in rural and mountainous regions. Officials reported that 130 homes were completely destroyed, while over 430 were partially damaged, affecting more than 1,130 families. The floods also wiped out 93 kilometres of roads and destroyed nearly 3,000 jeribs of agricultural land, further straining a country already grappling with a struggling economy and limited international aid. Tragic individual incidents include a 14-year-old boy killed by lightning in Badghis province and several drownings as residents attempted to recover driftwood from flooded streams.

In Pakistan, the provincial disaster management authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa noted that many casualties resulted from roof collapses and landslides triggered by the heavy downpour. Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas to manage the aftermath and provide relief to displaced families. With more rain and storms forecast for central and eastern regions through Tuesday, authorities in both nations have urged residents to stay away from riverbanks and follow weather advisories strictly to prevent further loss of life.
