Kolkata (Gurpreet Singh): The hearing process for “logical discrepancy” cases under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise concluded across West Bengal on Saturday, a senior official of the Election Commission of India said. The final electoral rolls are now scheduled to be published on February 28.
The hearings, which began on December 27, were conducted at designated camps set up in schools, club premises and government buildings throughout the state. The exercise aimed to address omissions, spelling errors and other inconsistencies detected in the draft voter list.
According to the official, election authorities will scrutinise submitted documents until February 21 before finalising the rolls. Any pending data with Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) must be uploaded by Monday to ensure timely publication.
During the enumeration process, approximately 58 lakh names — including those of deceased, duplicate or shifted voters — were identified as fit for deletion and excluded from the draft electoral rolls released in December.
The deadline for publishing the final rolls was initially set for February 14 but was later extended by the Election Commission to February 28.
While the official did not specify the final number of names that will be removed, he indicated that many individuals flagged during the revision process did not attend the hearings despite receiving repeated notices.
The publication of the revised rolls will determine the updated voter list ahead of upcoming electoral activities in the state.
