Haryana School Board Implements Three-Language Formula for Classes 9 and 10

Third language to become mandatory from 2025–26 under NEP

Chandigarh, April 7 – The Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE), Bhiwani, has decided to implement the three-language formula in all affiliated government and private schools for students of Classes 9 and 10, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Providing details, Board Chairman Prof. (Dr.) Pawan Kumar stated that from the 2025–26 academic session, students of Class 9 will be required to study seven subjects—six compulsory and one optional. A third language, in addition to the already mandatory Hindi and English, will be introduced as a compulsory subject. Students must choose one among Sanskrit, Urdu, or Punjabi as their third language.

From the 2026–27 academic session onward, the same structure will apply to Class 10 as well. This step aims to align school education with the linguistic and cultural goals set forth by NEP 2020, ensuring a balanced and inclusive learning environment.

The education board has already issued an official directive to all district education officers in the state, mandating the implementation of this formula in all affiliated schools. Further information regarding modifications in exam passing criteria due to this policy change will be communicated later.

Dr. Kumar emphasized that the three-language policy is designed to enhance linguistic flexibility, preserve regional languages, and better equip students for future academic and professional pursuits.
