Haryana Records Improvement in Sex Ratio, Illegal Abortions Decline Sharply

Strict government action leads to a 9-point rise in sex ratio; 23% drop in abortion cases compared to last year

Chandigarh, December 23: Strict enforcement by the Haryana government against illegal abortions has resulted in a significant decline in such cases across the state. Official data shows that abortion cases dropped by 23 percent this year compared to 2024, helping save the lives of thousands of unborn girls. As a result, the state’s sex ratio has improved from 909 last year to 918 this year, marking a rise of nine points.

The progress was reviewed during the weekly meeting of the Special Task Force constituted by the Haryana government to curb illegal sex determination and abortions. The meeting was chaired by Health Department Secretary and National Health Mission (NHM) Haryana Mission Director R.S. Dhillon.

The review meeting was attended by Director General of Health Services Dr Manish Bansal, along with senior officials including Dr Kuldeep Singh, Dr Virender Yadav, Dr Simmi Verma, Dr Parveen Bura, and Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao nodal officer G.L. Singal.

During the meeting, R.S. Dhillon reviewed cases related to the illegal sale of MTP kits and violations under the PNDT Act. He directed nodal officers of districts that have reported a decline in sex ratio compared to last year to closely monitor incidents of illegal sex determination and subsequent abortions in their respective areas.

Emphasising stricter enforcement, Dhillon stressed the importance of reverse tracking in abortion cases to identify the entire chain involved in illegal practices. He also instructed officials to ensure strong legal follow-up and effective prosecution in court cases related to illegal MTP and PNDT violations, underlining the government’s zero-tolerance approach toward gender-based crimes.
