HARYANA (Balwinder Singh): Two young basketball players died in separate, freak accidents during practice sessions this week, prompting Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to issue compensation to their families and launch an immediate review of sporting infrastructure across the state.
The victims, Aman from Bahadurgarh and Hardik from Lakhan Majra, were practicing at local courts when the basketball poles unexpectedly collapsed, causing fatal injuries. Both incidents occurred within a short span of each other, leading to widespread concern among coaches, parents and athletes.
Describing the tragedies as “deeply distressing,” Saini approved a ₹5 lakh relief package for each bereaved family. He offered his condolences, saying the administration shares the grief of those who lost their children.
In response to the incidents, the Chief Minister instructed the Sports Department to carry out a full technical inspection of equipment in government-run and supported facilities. Officials have been told to identify structural weaknesses, upgrade aging infrastructure and ensure adherence to safety standards.
Saini stressed that protecting young athletes must remain a top priority, adding that authorities would be held accountable for lapses. The government is expected to release an initial assessment of the statewide inspections in the coming weeks.
