Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh): The Haryana government is supplying certified, disease-resistant potato seeds through the Department of Horticulture to enhance crop productivity and elevate farmer incomes across the state. Announcing the initiative in Chandigarh on Tuesday, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana affirmed that distributing superior seed varieties forms a key part of the state’s broader strategy to support rural prosperity and empower growers economically.
Under the distribution drive, the Potato Technology Centre at Shamgarh in Karnal is supplying early generation seeds and minitubers across popular high-yield cultivars, including Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Mohan, Kufri Khyati, Kufri Chipsona, and Kufri Frysona. Farmers can reserve these virus-free seeds online from home via the department’s nursery portal. The minister noted that using verified seed stocks will not only raise per-acre yields but also yield uniform, premium-quality potatoes that fetch higher market prices, directly augmenting net household margins.
The Shamgarh centre has catalogued substantial stock across diverse maturity stages and size grades. Available inventories include 1,276 quintals of seed size, 298.5 quintals of undersize, and 157 quintals of oversize stocks under the Early Generation Seed Year-3 tier for Kufri Pukhraj. Under the Year-4 category for Kufri Mohan, 255.5 quintals of seed size, 9 quintals of undersize, and 210 quintals of oversize lots are ready for uptake. In the Year-1 classification, farmers can access one quintal of undersize Kufri Chipsona-1, 2.5 quintals of seed size and 20.5 quintals of oversize Kufri Khyati, alongside 0.5 quintals of oversize Kufri Uday.
The facility is also distributing tissue culture minitubers to potato growers. Supplies include 25,000 units of Kufri Uday, 8,000 of Kufri Chipsona-1, 11,000 of Kufri Himalini, and 75,000 of Kufri Frysona.
