Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh): Haryana Governor Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh has urged young people to incorporate the teachings of Sant Ravidas into their daily lives, stressing that his philosophy should extend beyond books and academic discussions to real-world actions promoting equality and humanity.
Addressing an international seminar titled ‘Sant Ravidas: Tradition, Transformation and the Consciousness of Resistance’ at Panjab University in Chandigarh on Friday, the Governor called on young people to stand up against discrimination, help those in need and work to create opportunities for people who are often left behind.
He said putting Sant Ravidas’ ideals into practice would be a meaningful tribute to the saint’s legacy. The seminar brought together scholars, researchers and students to discuss his social philosophy, literary contributions and vision of an egalitarian society.
‘Begumpura’ Envisions A Society Free From Discrimination
Prof. Ghosh said Sant Ravidas’ concept of Begumpura represented a society free from fear, discrimination and injustice, where everyone could live with dignity and enjoy equal opportunities.
He stressed the need to build a society in which every child has access to education, young people can pursue opportunities according to their abilities, women receive equal opportunities and every individual can live with dignity.
The Governor said creating such an inclusive society was not solely the government’s responsibility but a collective duty shared by all citizens.
Use Social Media To Promote Harmony
Speaking about the influence of social media, the Governor said digital platforms should be used to strengthen dialogue, improve mutual understanding and encourage positive ideas rather than create divisions.
He noted that differences of opinion were natural, but respect for others must remain intact. According to him, the ability to disagree while maintaining mutual respect is an important feature of a democratic society and a strength of Indian culture.
Prof. Ghosh also urged universities and educational institutions to ensure that academic discussions on Sant Ravidas continued beyond one-day events. He called for sustained research into the saint’s writings, philosophy and social thought, along with meaningful discussions among students to take these ideas beyond classrooms and into society.
‘Man Changa To Kathoti Mein Ganga’ Highlights Inner Change
Referring to Sant Ravidas’ famous saying, ‘Man Changa To Kathoti Mein Ganga’, the Governor said meaningful social transformation begins with an individual’s own thoughts and conduct.
He explained that a mindset rooted in equality, respectful behaviour and humanity could bring positive changes from within families to the wider community. He urged people to adopt Sant Ravidas’ teachings in everyday life rather than confining them to books, speeches and public events.
Development Must Include The Most Marginalised
Highlighting India’s progress in technology, artificial intelligence, digital transformation and economic opportunities, Prof. Ghosh said development must benefit every section of society.
He stressed that genuine progress could not be measured only through technological or economic growth; it must also ensure dignity, equal opportunities and the ability to move forward for those at the margins of society.
The Governor said Sant Ravidas’ teachings continued to offer relevant guidance for building a just, inclusive and compassionate society.
The event was attended by Mohit Handa, the Governor’s aide-de-camp; Prof. Savita Gupta, Director of the Research and Development Cell at Panjab University; Prof. Ashok Kumar, Head of the Department of Hindi; and several scholars, researchers and students.
