Private school students free to buy books from any shop; NEP to be fully implemented this year

Chandigarh, April 9 – Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has assured that all students in government schools will receive their textbooks by April 15. Addressing concerns about private school students, he clarified that they are free to purchase books from any bookstore and cannot be compelled to buy from a single shop.

Saini made these announcements during a meeting with officials from the school, technical, and higher education departments regarding the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP). Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda was also present.

The Chief Minister directed that all education-related announcements made in the 2025–26 budget be identified and executed swiftly. He emphasized collective efforts to raise the quality of education in the state.

He also instructed that the last 10 years’ question papers and mock tests for board classes be uploaded on the Haryana School Education Board’s website to help students in their preparations. A special committee will be formed to revise board exam papers as per NEP guidelines.

Saini stressed the importance of cleanliness, greenery, slogans, and painting work in schools to create an inspiring learning environment. He ordered that separate classes be held on sports and hygiene and that school-level cleanliness campaigns be conducted.

To ensure optimal use of resources, he instructed that no seats under the Right to Education (RTE) Act or in any higher education institution should remain vacant. He also mandated that first and second-grade officers spend one day every month in a government school, with a structured plan to be prepared soon.

Highlighting the full-scale rollout of the NEP this year, the CM asked departments to create awareness among students and youth. He promised recognition and encouragement for students and teachers performing exceptionally under the new education framework.

The state also plans to organize a Haryana Math Olympiad for students from Classes 10 to 12 to boost mathematical thinking. Bright students from Classes 6 to 12 will be taken on visits to premier institutes like ISRO, DRDO, and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

Saini further directed the development of a portal to track performance of higher education institutions, similar to the existing portal for schools. Colleges whose NAAC accreditation applications were rejected will be identified, and steps will be taken to address shortcomings.

Officials informed the CM that one government college from each district has been selected for development as a Model Sanskriti College, with a focus on academic excellence, modern facilities, and student welfare. The CM called for speeding up construction work for new college buildings across the state.
