Chandigarh, August 13 – Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan is not just a government initiative but a public movement that requires the active participation of youth, women, children, educational institutions, NGOs, saints, and social organisations. Addressing the state-level function in Panchkula on the fifth anniversary of the campaign, he stressed that when the youth are free from drugs, no power can stop India from becoming a developed nation.
Marking the occasion, district-level events were held across Haryana, with nearly three lakh people taking an anti-drug pledge. Launched on August 15, 2020, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative and led by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the campaign aims to build a healthy, prosperous, and bright future for the country by uniting people against substance abuse.
The CM highlighted Haryana’s commitment to becoming drug-free, citing recent events such as a massive cyclothon that saw lakhs of youth pledge to avoid drugs. Saints, khap panchayats, and volunteer groups have also extended their support. To strengthen the fight, the state has set up an inter-state secretariat in Panchkula with seven other states to share intelligence and coordinate action against drug trafficking. However, CM Saini emphasised that laws alone cannot eliminate drugs; mass awareness, community involvement, and youth engagement are essential.
He urged parents to spend time with their children, listen to them, and guide them so they do not lose their way. “Drugs do not only destroy an individual but also weaken the family and society,” he said, calling on citizens to help addicts recover instead of shunning them. During the event, attendees took a pledge to neither use drugs nor allow others to do so.
Citing PM Modi’s words and Swami Vivekananda’s vision, Saini said that India’s greatest strength lies in its youth, and steering them away from drugs will unlock their potential in education, sports, science, agriculture, industry, and entrepreneurship, thereby strengthening nation-building.
The gathering saw saints commend the Haryana government’s initiatives, stating that the nation’s progress depends on eradicating drugs from society. They described substance abuse as a threat not only to health but also to the country’s social and economic backbone. Religious and social organisations pledged their full support to the campaign.
The event was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma, Panchkula Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal, former Haryana Assembly Speaker Gyan Chand Gupta, village sarpanches, and other dignitaries.
