Haryana Environment Minister Directs Acceleration of Clean Yamuna Mission

Chandigarh, September 10: Haryana’s Environment and Forest Minister Rao Narbir Singh instructed officials to expedite all preparations to implement the Clean Yamuna Mission on the ground. He said that where Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) or Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are required, the tendering process must be completed and work allocated without delay.

The minister chaired a review meeting of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board to assess potential points of pollution in the Yamuna River. He emphasized that the quantity of clean water flowing from Haryana to Delhi through the Yamuna must maintain a Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) level of 120. Officials informed that the Central Pollution Control Board has identified certain points in the Yamuna as highly sensitive pollution zones. According to directives of the National Green Tribunal, Haryana’s Chief Secretary holds monthly review meetings, while the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti carries out quarterly reviews at the national level.

The meeting discussed plans to prevent untreated industrial wastewater from entering the Yamuna. Eight new CETPs have been proposed three each in Faridabad and Gurugram, and one each in Sonepat and Yamunanagar with a total capacity of 146 MLD. In addition, nine STPs with a combined capacity of 510 MLD are under construction and expected to be completed by December 2027. Officials also reported that 143 STPs and 18 CETPs in the Yamunanagar catchment have been equipped with Online Monitoring Devices.

In the past two years, 8,287 industrial units were inspected, and 828 units found violating pollution control norms were fined a total of ₹198.2 crore.
