Haryana Assembly Unanimously Passes Resolution on 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

Chandigarh, December 18: The Haryana Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, expressing gratitude to social organisations, religious bodies, public representatives and citizen groups for the successful organisation of commemorative events across the state.

The resolution was adopted on the first day of the Winter Session after a government proposal was presented by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mahipal Dhanda. During the discussion, the House also formally thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for paying tribute to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji at a grand congregation held at Jyotisar in Kurukshetra on November 25 and for his participation in the International Gita Mahotsav.

Addressing the Assembly, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, revered as ‘Hind Ki Chadar’, symbolised the soul of Indian civilisation that stood firmly for truth, righteousness and human dignity, even at the cost of supreme sacrifice. He said the Guru’s life and martyrdom continue to inspire generations to resist injustice and oppression.

The Chief Minister recalled that on August 25, 2025, the Assembly had unanimously resolved to observe the 350th martyrdom year of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji across Haryana with dignity and pride. To implement this resolve, an all-party meeting was held in Chandigarh on November 3, where leaders from all political parties offered suggestions to ensure wide public participation. It was decided that the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee would organise the programmes with full support from the state government.

Saini said four major religious processions dedicated to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji were organised from Sirsa, Pinjore, Faridabad and Sadhaura, passing through more than 500 villages across 20 districts. Around 1.5 lakh people participated in these yatras, which culminated at Kurukshetra on November 24, spreading the Guru’s message of sacrifice and righteousness.

He said the grand congregation held at Jyotisar on November 25, in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, elevated the commemorations to a spiritual height, with lakhs of devotees attending from across the state and beyond. The Prime Minister released a commemorative coin, a postage stamp and a coffee table book on Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, giving the event national and international recognition.

The Chief Minister highlighted that 350 blood donation camps were organised across Haryana, collecting over 23,000 units of blood. Essay competitions in multiple languages were conducted in schools, witnessing participation from nearly 3.5 lakh students. A state-level story-writing competition, a national seminar at Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa, and the decision to establish a research chair in the Guru’s name were also part of the commemorations.

Several lasting tributes were announced, including renaming Government Polytechnic, Ambala, after Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, naming the Tohana–Jind–Dhamtan Sahib road as ‘Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Marg’, developing a forest in Kalesar in his name, and announcing the opening of Guru Tegh Bahadur Agricultural College in Kishanpura, Yamunanagar.

Saini said Haryana is not only the land of warriors but also of Gurus, as several Sikh Gurus sanctified the state with their presence. He emphasised the responsibility of passing on Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s ideals of courage, sacrifice and humanity to future generations.

At the end of the discussion, the Chief Minister appealed to the House to pass the resolution unanimously, which was done amid consensus.
