Haryana Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana Emphasizes Boosting Sugarcane Production through Modern Technology

Chandigarh, October 18: Haryana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana urged officials to focus on increasing sugarcane production and raising awareness among farmers about using modern techniques for sowing. He also directed that cooperative sugar mills be equipped with advanced machinery to enhance recovery rates and reduce losses.

Rana gave these directions while presiding over a meeting of the Sugarcane Control Board in Chandigarh. Haryana Cooperation Minister Dr. Arvind Sharma also joined the meeting through video conferencing.

The minister announced that sugarcane varieties released by the Central Variety Release Committee for the north-western region will be automatically recognized by the state government. There will be no need for separate approval from Haryana Agricultural University (HAU). He said farmers should be informed about new sugarcane seed varieties to help improve yields and profits, thereby increasing overall sugarcane and sugar production in the state.

Highlighting payment status, Rana said cooperative sugar mills in Haryana have completed full payment of ₹1,278.50 crore to farmers for the 2024–25 crushing season. However, Narayangarh Sugar Mill, a private unit, still owes dues from the previous season, which will be cleared by December 2025.

The minister also emphasized the adoption of modern machinery for sowing and harvesting to reduce farmers’ costs and increase profitability.

The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department Pankaj Agarwal, Director of Agriculture Rajnarayan Kaushik, Managing Director of Haryana State Cooperative Sugar Mills Federation Shakti Singh, Registrar of Cooperative Societies Mahendra Pal, Sugarcane Advisor Dr. Roshan Lal, scientists from the Sugarcane Breeding Centre Karnal and HAU, along with other departmental officials.
