Gurugram to Launch Pilot Project Aiming for Plastic-Free Model City Status

Gurugram (Haryana), June 1, 2025: In a significant environmental move, Gurugram is set to launch a pilot project aimed at transforming it into a plastic-free model city. As part of this campaign, select areas within the city will host a series of activities encouraging the shift toward eco-friendly living.

Haryana Environment Minister Rao Narbir Singh has been actively promoting the initiative, urging citizens to reduce plastic use and embrace sustainable alternatives. The pilot project is positioned as more than just a government effort—it is being pitched as a public movement that demands collective participation.

At a key review meeting held in Gurugram, Additional Chief Secretary of the Environment, Forest, and Wildlife Department, Anand Mohan Sharan, emphasized the need for grassroots involvement. He stated that successful outcomes in states like Sikkim and cities like Indore demonstrate that such campaigns can achieve tangible results when people are actively engaged.

Sharan noted that many NGOs have already expressed interest in supporting the campaign. To drive awareness, he directed officials to roll out extensive public engagement strategies, including posters, short videos, jingles, social media messaging, street plays, and local meetings.

Special attention will be given to awareness programs across schools, colleges, residential societies, malls, markets, MNC offices, and other key public areas. The campaign’s success, he said, will hinge on transforming individual habits and encouraging citizens to quit plastic use entirely.

Senior officials present at the meeting included Member Secretary of the Pollution Control Board Sh. Pardeep Dagar, Additional Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation Gurugram Sh. Jitender Kumar, Joint Commissioner Sh. Mahavir Prasad, Sh. Sumit Kumar, Sh. Vishal, Sh. Jaiveer Yadav, and Forest Conservator Sh. Subhash Yadav.
