Government Issues Advisory Restricting Live Media Coverage of Defence Operations

New Delhi, April 27, 2025 – In a major move aimed at safeguarding national security and operational integrity, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory restricting live coverage of ongoing and sensitive defence operations by all media houses. The advisory, dated April 26, 2025, was issued under Rule 6(1)(e) of the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994.

The government has strongly reminded all television channels and digital platforms that broadcasting live footage of ongoing anti-terrorism operations, or any activities of the armed forces during such missions, poses a significant threat to national security. Media outlets have been directed to avoid transmitting any real-time visuals or detailed operational information that could aid hostile elements or compromise the lives of security forces and civilians.

The advisory cites past incidents like the 1999 Kargil War and the 2008 Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks, where live media coverage was exploited by enemy forces to monitor and strategize against Indian defence operations.

Highlighting concerns over recent media practices, the advisory states, “It has come to notice that in the aftermath of terror incidents, some TV channels tend to broadcast sensitive details, thereby unintentionally aiding terrorist objectives.” The government emphasized that such actions could obstruct or endanger national security interests and must be strictly avoided.

As per the advisory, the media must adhere to the following guidelines:

No live telecast of operations by security forces.

No disclosure of tactical positions, movements, or operational strategies.

Visuals should be delayed and must not reveal real-time positions of personnel.

Use only official, verified information provided by government agencies.

Media organizations have also been warned that any violation of these instructions may invite action under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and other applicable laws.

The government has reiterated its faith in the media’s role in a democracy but stressed that national security must not be compromised under any circumstances. It urged all channels to act responsibly and coordinate with official sources while reporting on defence-related matters.

This move comes in the backdrop of heightened security concerns following recent terror incidents across the country, including the attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
