Golden Temple Under Tight Security Ahead of Operation Bluestar Anniversary

Indian Army Thwarts Pakistani Missile Strike on Golden Temple Using Advanced Air Defence Systems

Amritsar (National Times): Security has been significantly ramped up in Amritsar ahead of the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar, with nearly 4,000 police personnel deployed across the city to maintain law and order. With the sensitive occasion set for June 6, authorities have intensified surveillance and preventive measures, especially around the Golden Temple complex.

The Punjab Police have set up 24-hour checkpoints, conducted flag marches, and increased patrolling in coordination with forces from nearby districts, including Amritsar Rural, Batala, and Tarn Taran. Intelligence units and officers in plain clothes have also been tasked with monitoring sensitive zones for any signs of unrest.

“Thorough checking of vehicles and individuals is underway at all designated nakas (checkpoints),” said Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, assuring the public that strict vigil will be maintained throughout.

The increased security presence comes amid calls from hardline Sikh outfit Dal Khalsa for a march on June 5 and a shutdown of Amritsar on June 6, raising concerns of potential tension or disruption.

Controversy is also brewing over the address to be delivered by officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj on the anniversary day. Several influential Sikh factions, including Damdami Taksal and Nihang organisations, have expressed their opposition to Gargaj’s position and authority.

Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhumma and Baba Balbir Singh of the Shiromani Panth Akali Budha Dal have publicly rejected Gargaj’s appointment, claiming it violates established religious maryada (code of conduct). They argue he lacks the legitimacy to represent the Akal Takht or speak on behalf of the Panth (Sikh community).

The tension over religious leadership and planned protests has led security agencies to remain on high alert, with authorities closely monitoring developments in and around the Golden Temple, the symbolic and spiritual centre of Sikhism.

With the anniversary often marked by emotional tributes and political messaging, officials are taking no chances to ensure peace and communal harmony prevails in the holy city.
