Global Leaders Arrive in Calgary for G7 Summit in Kananaskis

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): A wave of international dignitaries landed in Calgary today ahead of the 2025 G7 Summit, which officially commences in nearby Kananaskis later this evening and runs through June 17. With global conflicts, trade tensions, and climate urgency dominating the agenda, the summit is being perceived as one of the most consequential in years.

The following leaders arrived in Calgary today were UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, attending his first G7 since taking office Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, received by Calgary officials and Indigenous leaders South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, among invited guest leaders from the Global South German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, expected to lead strong European coordination on global conflicts EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, representing the European Union Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, summit host, making his international debut as PM Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, US President Donald Trump focusing on Indo-Pacific stability and economic security.

G7 Participants include Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and the European Union (Council and Commission). Guest Nations include Australia, South Africa, India, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Ukraine, and the UAE.

Summit activities begin with bilateral meetings on the sidelines. Australian PM Albanese is set to meet with PM Carney first, followed by discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, UK’s Starmer, France’s Macron, Japan’s Ishiba, and Germany’s Merz.

The official summit agenda is set to kick off later this evening, with sessions expected to cover the Israel–Iran conflict, Russia’s war in Ukraine, global trade cooperation, climate action and green investment, AI and digital governance, and partnerships among the Global South. As the host, Canada aims to promote dialogue, unity, and practical solutions amid a deeply polarized international environment.
