Gill’s Ton Puts India on Top After Day 1 at Edgbaston

Edgbaston, July 2: India finished Day 1 of the second Test against England in a commanding position at 310 for 5, thanks to a sublime unbeaten century by Shubman Gill and a powerful start from Yashasvi Jaiswal.

After England captain Ben Stokes opted to bowl first, Jaiswal laid a strong foundation with a composed 87, frustrating the English seamers in the morning session. His knock set the tone for India’s innings before falling just before lunch.

Shubman Gill took charge after Jaiswal’s dismissal and remained unbeaten at stumps with a masterful 114 his seventh Test century showcasing elegant strokeplay and exceptional concentration. He received solid support from Ravindra Jadeja, who ended the day unbeaten on 41, as the pair put together a vital 99-run stand for the sixth wicket.

England’s seamers found early breakthroughs. KL Rahul fell cheaply for 2, trapped by Chris Woakes, while Karun Nair contributed 31 before being undone by Brydon Carse. But the home side’s momentum was dented as Gill and Jadeja navigated the second new ball late in the day with resilience.

With 310 runs on the board and five wickets in hand, India will look to push the total beyond 350 on Day 2. England, meanwhile, will bank on the freshness of the new ball and helpful early morning conditions to claw back into the contest.
