From Water Scarcity to Innovation: How Farmers in Southern Haryana Are Turning the Tide

Chandigarh – Once struggling with acute water scarcity, farmers in southern Haryana are now setting an example of agricultural transformation by adopting modern techniques. Government initiatives like the Khet-Jalghar scheme and micro-irrigation projects have changed lives in Mahendragarh district, especially in villages like Budin and Duloth, where farmers no longer depend solely on rainfall.

Farmers in Duloth explained that subsidies for building both community and individual ponds have enabled them to move beyond traditional practices. They are now using advanced methods like drip and sprinkler irrigation, producing higher yields with less water.

This shift is not only boosting farm incomes but also driving broader goals of water conservation, energy efficiency, and environmental balance. Many farmers are irrigating their fields through solar pumping systems, with scheduled timings to ensure fair usage for all.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana, the Micro Irrigation Command Area Development Authority (MIKADA) has shown farmers a new path. Irrigation pipelines now carry water directly from ponds to fields.

Junior Engineer Uttam Singh said farmers once struggled to produce even a single crop due to water shortage. Now, drip and sprinkler systems save 40–60% of water, cutting irrigation costs while increasing output.

A sustainable model for the future

MIKADA Executive Engineer Sonit Rathi said the Khet-Jalghar scheme is not only about doubling farmers’ income but also about building a sustainable farming system. With the right policies and technology, drought and water scarcity can be turned into opportunities.

Government support through subsidies

Farmers are receiving up to 75% subsidy on drip and sprinkler systems. Under the farm pond scheme, the subsidy goes up to 80% for community ponds and 70% for individual ones. In addition, solar pumps ranging from 3 HP to 10 HP come with subsidies of up to 75%, reducing dependence on electricity and diesel.
