Four Held as Amritsar Rural Police Uncover Illegal Arms and Opium Trade; M16 Rifle Among Seizures

Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): Amritsar Rural Police have arrested four people after uncovering two alleged networks involved in the illegal supply of firearms and narcotics. The police action resulted in the seizure of 15 kg of opium, nine illegal pistols, an M16 rifle and 25 live cartridges.

The operation has raised concerns over the alleged links between local criminal networks and smugglers based abroad. Preliminary findings suggest that the accused were connected to foreign-based smugglers and were allegedly involved in arranging illegal weapons. Investigators are examining these suspected connections to determine the extent of the network’s operations.

Separate cases have been registered at Gharinda and Lopoke police stations in Amritsar district. Police teams are continuing their investigation to identify the people who supplied the seized contraband and establish whether others were involved in transporting or distributing the weapons and narcotics.

The recovery of a sophisticated M16 rifle alongside nine pistols and ammunition has added an important dimension to the investigation. Officials are also working to trace the movement of the seized opium and uncover the wider network behind its alleged supply.

The investigation will focus on establishing the complete chain of contacts, from the alleged suppliers to the intended recipients, as police work to identify further suspects and determine the scale of the operation.

Punjab Police reiterated its commitment to curbing the circulation of illegal firearms and dismantling organised criminal networks. The department said it would continue taking firm action against those involved in the unlawful supply and trafficking of weapons.

Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
