Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Former Punjab Police Chief Mohammad Mustafa has strongly refuted all allegations linking him and his family to the death of his son, calling the accusations “completely without merit.”
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Mustafa expressed his willingness to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation and welcomed the FIR filed against him and his wife, former minister Razia Sultana. The FIR relates to the death of their 35-year-old son, Aqeel Akhtar, whose body was discovered at their Panchkula residence on October 16.
Authorities have also registered cases against Aqeel’s wife and sister in connection with the incident. Initially, the family attributed Aqeel’s demise to a drug overdose and conducted his burial in their ancestral village, Harda Kheri.
Mustafa revealed that his son had battled a long-term mental health disorder for nearly 18 years and struggled with drug addiction. He explained that Aqeel’s condition frequently led to violent outbursts and erratic behavior, including serious incidents such as causing injury to his mother in 2008, which the family had chosen to keep private until now.
Addressing a video of Aqeel posted on social media in late August, where the son leveled serious accusations against his family, Mustafa stated that the recording was made during a period of mental distress. The video was deleted shortly after its upload but has since been circulated and misused to defame the family.
Mustafa firmly rejected claims made by a complainant from Malerkotla, terming them “false and politically motivated attempts to damage my reputation.” He emphasized that a post-mortem was conducted at his request, but the report is yet to be made public.
He concluded by affirming his faith in the investigation and stated that the truth would eventually come out through proper legal channels.
